CC recommends: New poetry

by Steve Thorngate

Here's one more gift-buying list from our "CC recommends" feature in the December 15 issue of the Century: selections in poetry by poet and Poetry magazine editor Christian Wiman. Below is the list from the magazine; go here for Christian's comments:
Astonishments, by Anna Kamienska

Happiness and Holiness,
edited by Denise Inge

Chinese Apples,
by W. S. Di Piero

City Dog,
by W. S. DiPiero

The Winter Sun,
by Fanny Howe
And here's a bonus selection, a book not yet in print but available for pre-order from the publisher, with Christian's comments:
The Ecco Anthology of International Poetry, edited by Ilya Kaminsky and Susan Harris. "There are basically two types of poetry anthologies: the sober, conscientious, representative sort that's on the syllabus of every introductory survey course, and the eclectic, freewheeling sort that is as much a reflection of an editor's mind as of his or her time. Ilya Kaminsky—a young, deaf, Ukrainian-born and endlessly talented poet now writing in English—has produced the latter type of anthology: a great big grab bag of poems from all over the world, united by nothing but his love for them."
