Like other likely 2012 presidential candidates, Tim Pawlenty—the Republican governor of Minnesota—is courting his party’s major constituencies. At last month’s Conservative Political Action Conference, Pawlenty offered a list of core conservative principles—including the idea that “God’s in charge,” not government.
This week, Minnesota clergy gathered in support of preserving a state-funded program for medical care for low-income adults, a move Pawlenty vetoed. At the event, Lutheran pastor Grant Stevensen made a “personal request of the governor”:
Please, stop talking to us about God. The governor is going around saying “God is in control.” We elected you. We elected you to be making decisions for this state that will help everyone in this state. Things that will lift up the poorest in this state. Don't pass this on to God. That's no God we've ever heard of. And please stop lecturing us about God. It's offensive.Read the whole quote here. (Via Susan Hogan.)
